He battles the fish for 3 days. After 3 days of the determination, he finally gets the fish and pulls close to the boat and kills it. The fish is too big to fit into the boat so he ties it on the side and goes back home. While going home in the middle of the sea the magnificent fish is nothing but bones.
What the book says:-
This story is very short and simple but it teaches us a lot like failure versus success, human relationship with nature. Santiago is an old man who is hardworking and never gives up. There is a line in this book " A man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated'.

Challenges and difficulties will come in life but they will shape you and let you grow.
Hemingway tells us what success really means in this book. Though he failed that day by not getting the fish but Santiago's hard work, integrity and determination win that day. You are never too old to put up a good fight. Santiago accepts his failure and mistakes which requires lots of courage to admit it.
There is another beautiful line in the book "Every day is a new day, it is better to be lucky, but I would rather be exact then when luck comes you are ready".
Santiago believes in hard work, persist and not luck. Keep trying. He believes in his ability rather than his luck. Working hard will pay off someday for sure.
